| Interior Decorating Program Description |
|
Interior Decorating combines the principles and elements of design and business procedures so that graduates will have a vast array of transferable skills that will allow them to become entrepreneurs or seek challenging careers in a variety of areas within the retail industry as consultants. Students will learn the detailed knowledge required to decorate residential, commercial, and institutional settings, plus the necessary knowledge of furniture, accessories, and colour required by professionals in the business. A basic introduction to design, architecture and blueprints will also be discussed. Success College of Applied Arts & Technology Interior Decorating Program is recognized by CDECA (The Canadian Decorating Association).

Class Hours
Classes are 7.5 hours per day Monday to Thursday. The students receive 30 hours per week of classroom instruction. In addition to classroom instruction the students must complete a Practicum period of 320 hours within an interior decorating environment.
The students have a winter and spring break, statutory holidays. Class may also be held off campus for practical instruction if required.
Instructors
Instructors are approved by the Department of Education, Private Career Colleges Division, to have the qualifications, education and experience to deliver the training materials in specific subjects.
Attendance
The Policies outline the penalties for late work, retesting, plagiarism and absenteeism.
Pass Mark
Students must obtain a passing grade, a minimum in each module, to qualify for graduation.
Instructional Methodology
The methods of instruction link the theory to the practice. The features of actual teaching and learning practices are delivered in classroom and in the work environment. Delivery of instruction can be in any of the following methods:
- Lectures presenting the factual information
- Lectures with discussion among the students allowing for clarification of issues, debate and challenge
- Expert guest speakers who bring the practical to the student
- Group or teamwork directed by the instructor/facilitator, allowing for full participation of the students, public speaking and presentations are required
- Audio/visual delivery through instructional material
- PowerPoint presentations, overheads, videos, and audiotapes
- Role-playing allows a facilitator to set the stage with a life imitating scenarios and train the students how to react or conduct themselves in accordance within company protocols, ethics and the industry
- Studies, reports, papers all to factually research information and prepare the results for presentation
- Participate in seminars and field visits
- Throughout the year the students must build their presentation portfolios
- Students will do floor layouts and decorating projects through the use of the Auto CAD
The Interior Decor Consultant Certification
The Interior Decor Consultant Certification and the Window Covering Specialist Training are both delivered by Marjorie Fougere. Success College is the only provider of this Certification in Nova Scotia. Through the Complete Guide to Window Coverings, students will cover the use of fabric, texture, and pattern to create award winning window dressings and valances. In addition they will receive a 30-page Interior Decorators Workbook and CD covering pricing for draperies, swags, valances, shades, bedding, accessories, rods and installation and upholstery. Students must successfully complete and pass the exam for this Certification in order to graduate the Interior Decorating Program.
Students work on apprenticeship projects in the community during the year to practice the skills they are developing. Projects are established by the College or through a student’s contacts but all must have the approval of the Instructor.
Math Skills for Decorators
This module will refresh the students on basic mathematical concepts, with emphasis on learning how to convert metric to imperial (the industry standards still use the imperial system). Using the math skills to calculate area or square footage of a room to estimate how much flooring, wallpaper, paint etc. would be require for your client.
Research and Creativity
This module will help the students in developing their imaginations through the creative process. Some group activities will define the various roles played by different members of work groups, and the steps to problem solving will be defined.
Computer Applications
Students will be introduced to the basic terminology and commands that are pertinent to running a computer today, as well as the various tools that accompany it.
Artistic Drawing/Rapid Drawing
Students will learn how to quickly draw out a sketch on a pad to communicate an idea or concept for a client’s project. Freehand drawing techniques and the different mediums used in artistic drawing will be studied and applied.
Principles and Elements of Design
These are the cornerstones of good decorating, the root of every project lies in the elements and they are transformed by correctly applying certain principles. The student will learn to analyze a room in its entirety, identify its strengths and weaknesses, and create a pleasing atmosphere within it.
Architectural Details
The purpose of this module is to familiarize the student with the various components of buildings in order to recognize them on house plans and at job sites. Recognizing exterior architectural features of different home styles will also be helpful in guiding the students along the decorating path. Learning about the history of architectural details and where they come from.
Human Factors
The study of human behavioural patterns in their surroundings, comfort zones, anthropometrics and ergonomics, and universal considerations for the physically challenged.
Design Basics
Building details having been examined, the student will now learn how to read and understand blueprints, measure rooms and make rough sketches with the details in order to transfer these details to scaled drawings accomplished by using the many drafting tools available. The student will also study how to plan traffic patterns and furniture layouts that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Colour
This module will familiarize the student with the theories behind colour coordination, psychological effects of colour, mixing paints to create colour, and putting together colour schemes.
History of Furniture and Accessories
The various furniture designs/designers, styles and furniture components throughout history will be studied along with the art trends famed for each period.
Finish Materials
The student will learn about the different materials used to finish a room, their characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, maintenance and their applications in order to make the proper finish choices for their clients.
Visual Presentation Techniques
The student will learn about the tools and materials, as well as different techniques, for mounting professional presentation boards which will serve as tools themselves in selling their ideas for decorating schemes to their clients.
Auto CAD for Decorators I
This course introduces students to computer-aided drafting. Students learn how to produce floor plans and elevations for residential and commercial settings.
Auto CAD for Decorators II
This course builds on the fundamentals of AUTOCAD I. Students will prepare detailed floor plans, elevations and rendered drawings to support their decorating course. Emphasis will be placed on communication of concepts through to completion.
Styles of Today
The students will examine current and period styles from around the world and named for famous designers or phases of design. They will also examine their own personal style and try to interpret it visually. The majority of this module is focused on individual projects and class presentations. An in-depth assignment on a specific style will be prepared by each of the students and presented to the class.
Kitchen and Bath Design
This module will enable the student to choose the appropriate materials and accessories available for kitchens and bathrooms, as well as cabinets and countertops pros and cons. The student will also get a general idea on how to shop for cabinets and how they are priced.
Fabrics
The student will learn how to identify natural and synthetic fabrics, their advantages and disadvantages, maintenance, their best applications and how to mix and match them. The suitability of patterns to different styles will also be examined.
Window Treatments
The students will be introduced to the world of window fashions in its many varieties and the accessories used with them. They will also learn how to measure, sketch and estimate the amount of material needed for a project.
Lighting
Lighting applications will be studied from a decorator’s perspective. Learn about different application for lighting in a room. Learn various styles of lighting. Learn how to create mood and ambiance, without losing the functionality.
One point / Two-point Perspective
The student will learn the aspects of drawing in 1 and 2 point perspective.
Colour Rendering
Different techniques and colouring media will be studied and practiced by applying colour to various projects including floor plan, furniture layout, and perspective drawings.
Commercial Finish Specification
Students will be familiarized with the difference between residential and commercial decorating; the effects of the building code on finish choices and specifying for large projects.
Professional Practice/ Stress Management
The students will learn how to start and operate their own decorating business, from budgeting to purchasing and billing. The ability to handle stressful situations and react in a professional manner is a skill. Student will explore the factors that cause stress and methods for stress reduction and management. Build a professional resume and cover letter.
Practicum
To be eligible for field training practicum, students must pass all modules. Field training is mandatory for successful completion of diploma. |
