Digital Graphic Design Program Description
|
Digital Graphic Design is an expanding field with many applications in business, education and consumer markets. This program will cover both basic and advanced features of graphic design, scripting, web design and development, videography and digital illustration. The program blends classroom instruction, hands-on practice and assignments, team project work, and three months of field training.
Students will graduate with a substantial portfolio of work, and will use it as a basis for producing unique CD-ROM and web-based “e-portfolios”. The Digital Graphic Design program will appeal to highly motivated individuals with a flair for the creative. A great deal of independent work is required, as is the ability to work as part of a team. |

Class Hours
Classes are Monday to Thursday of classroom instruction. In addition to classroom instruction the students must complete a Practicum within the industry environment.
The students have a Winter, Spring and Summer break, and statutory holidays. Class may also be held off campus for practical instruction if required.
Instructors
Instructors are approved by the Department of Education, Private Career Colleges Division, to have the qualifications, education and experience to deliver the training materials in specific subjects.
Attendance
Students must not fall below our attendance rate or they will not be permitted to graduate. The Policies outline the penalties for late work, retesting, plagiarism and absenteeism.
Pass Mark
Students must obtain a passing grade in each module to qualify for graduation.
Instructional Methodology
The methods of instruction link the theory to the practice. The features of actual teaching and learning practices are delivered in classroom and in the work environment. Delivery of instruction can be in any of the following methods:
- Lectures presenting the factual information
- Lectures with discussion among the students allowing for clarification of issues, debate and challenge
- Expert guest speakers who bring the practical to the student
- Group or teamwork directed by the instructor/facilitator, allowing for full participation of the students
- Audio/visual delivery through instructional material
- PowerPoint presentations, overheads, videos, and audiotapes
- Role-playing allows a facilitator to set the stage with a life imitating scenarios and train the students how to react or conduct themselves in accordance within company protocols, ethics and the industry,
- Studies, reports, papers all to factually research information and prepare the results for presentation
- Participate in seminars and field visits
Professional Development
This module is designed to assist students in obtaining employment and how to become an effective employee. The student will prepare resumes, print and digital portfolios, discuss various interview techniques, identify time wasters and develop a strategy for time management. Stress is prevalent in the work environment therefore; students will analyze stress triggers and identify coping skills. Students will also analyze human relations in the workplace, attitude, identifying needs and presentation skills. Digital methodology will also be discussed.
Introduction to Computer Hardware
In this module, students will be introduced to the various hardware components of the PC platform. They will be able to select, install and troubleshoot common computer peripherals that will be used in all future modules.
Operating Systems
This module will focus on the Windows Operating System environment, which the students will use for the reminder of the program. There will also be some discussion and comparisons of the MacIntosh 0/S and its use in the multimedia industry. Areas of study will include: software installation, file management, troubleshooting, and system and resource optimization for multimedia.
Microsoft Office Suites I
This module will introduce students to the Microsoft Office Suite. By learning the basics of a Word Processing Suite and basic document structure, students will be preparing themselves for the upcoming Desktop Publishing module.
Microsoft Office Suites II
In this second portion of the Office Suite module, students will be introduced to common business presentations using PowerPoint. The basic practices and concepts they learn here will translate to more advanced presentation software, covered in later modules, such as Director and Flash.
Introduction to Marketing
Students will be introduced to the basic concepts of Marketing. They will learn to first identify and then satisfy customer needs and wants. An understanding of these concepts will enable students to develop focused, effective products, projects and presentations for their clients or employers.
Introduction to Multimedia Concepts
In this, the first pure “Multimedia” module, students will explore the current multimedia industry. They will research current industry trends and requirements for multimedia developers. The remaining areas of study, GUI design, Digital Imaging, Desktop Publishing, Authoring, Web Publishing and Desktop Video will be introduced with a discussion of their place in the multimedia industry, and with basic exercises in each area. Students will be encouraged to begin to develop a career path in multimedia and to take inventory of their current skills and talents.
Desktop Publishing
In this module, students will explore one of the oldest areas of multimedia design, desktop publishing. Using the industry standard software for DTP, Adobe PageMaker, students will use their new knowledge of Marketing to develop effective print presentations. Areas of discussion will include: page layout, typography, publications, templates and the printing process.
Digital Imaging
In the digital imaging module, students will learn the core graphic creation and manipulation skills that will become the foundation of all of their work as multimedia developers. Using the industry standard tools for photo and graphic manipulation, Adobe Photoshop and for line art and image create, Adobe Illustrator, students will learn to translate their creativity into digital media. Students will be responsible for no less than three projects over this six-week module that will test their ability to generate and manipulate professional quality digital graphics.
Graphic Design Elements
This module will introduce students to basic graphic design elements and materials design synthesis as well as gaining a new appreciation for the human response to design in terms of visual, emotional and perceptual impact. As well, students will be encouraged to develop their abilities to constructively critique their peers, as well as their own (and others) work.
Students will also explore the concept of manual and digital color-separation of camera/print ready artwork, applying typestyles, and pre-press design preparations.
Interactive Authoring
Authoring will introduce the students to the complex requirements of designing interactive applications for educational and entertainment projects. Students will combine their new knowledge of GUI design and their digital imaging skills to create intuitive, media rich applications.
Desktop Video Production
Digital Desktop Video Production will encourage students to try their hands as film producers, directors and primarily editors by involving them in team video production projects. They will storyboard, shoot and then compose and edit short films using Adobe Premiere. The final weeks of the module will be spent adding post production special effects to their short films using Adobe After Effects.
Internet Programming and Design
This module will introduce students to the challenging task of delivering rich multimedia content over the World Wide Web. Students will develop an in depth understand of HTML scripting that will allow them to create complete websites with or without the luxury of an HTML editor. Then they will learn to create interactive web animations with the latest internet technology, Flash 5. They will also explore the latest trend in the web browsers and enhancements such as Java Script and Cascading Style Sheets and XML.
Digital Graphic Design Work Practicum
To be eligible for field training, students must pass all modules. Field training is mandatory for a successful completion of the Digital Graphic Design Diploma.
